The Power of MUN, Part 2

By Radhika Joshi, Chatsworth International School

POWERThe United Nations is critical to the world as we know it. It creates bridges between countries and helps governments as well as  people. The Model United Nations allows students, particularly young people with an interest in the world, to take part in this very activity by debating topics that affect the world in which they live in. Model United Nations empowers teenagers and forces them out of their otherwise self-centered lives. Delegates come from far and wide to meet like-minded people who share the same desire to change the world, to make some sort of difference so that everyone can live in a better place. Thousands of people every year meet and form unbreakable bonds, forged over tireless merging and vehement debate. Similar personalities mix over days of collaboration and allow for unforgettable memories. During these experiences, students are made to empathize with their assigned nations while keeping in mind the interests of other nations. They step into  a place they may have never heard of before, but still succeed. The Model United Nations is a gateway into truly accepting the international culture that they are all part of. MUN is an international experience, and that is why it is so powerful. It allows delegates to experience an atmosphere where internationalism is essential.

The Model United Nations is a portal to understanding the world’s issues, and more importantly, what can be done to fix them. It is a way to discover comprehensive solutions to challenging disputes that have perplexed governments the world over. It is a glimpse into the real world, from the formal attire to the gravity of the debate, and it fosters a true interest in the lives of people who are affected by the issues being debated. Various committees tackle issues that concern everything from the environment to military aggression. Problems are tackled with head on ferocity while keeping in mind the realistic solutions that could actually assist those in need. Young people are asked to go above and beyond to explore difficulties that are faced everyday by hundreds of thousands of people. These difficulties, ranging from sustainable development to non-proliferation in North Korea, are approached with true dedication, both to the problem and the solution.

Most importantly, MUN creates a way in which students can truly get involved. They are not disregarded as teenagers, but are asked for their perspective. They are told to think about the world and help make it a better place for succeeding generations. They are not seen as obstructions, but as catalysts. The Model United Nations is a forum for young people who want to change things. It is a place where ideas grow and go on to actually create ways in which real people can solve real problems. It is a way of allowing young people who will one day run the world to immerse themselves in the problems of today so that they are equipped to deal with the problems of tomorrow.
