Interview With Mrs. Anu

No one who has participated in THIMUN IV over the last few days would argue against the fact that THIMUN IV was made possible because of the hard working, dedicated Administrative Staffs of the Hua Chung Institution. From directing lost delegates around the school to providing lunch, the admin staffs’ helping hands behind the scenes definitely acted as the backbone of this year’s THIMUN Singapore conference. However, running and organizing such admin team requires great skill, energy and dedication. To learn more about the lady who possesses all these skills, Munity East interviewed Ms. Anu, the administrative staff coordinator of THIMUN IX.

How did you become the THIMUN IX administrative staff coordinator?

“Because I have experience and I am familiar with MUN, I was asked to be the administrative staff coordinator. I have been here for more than 3 years, and have worked in THIMUN before, so I accepted the request. I am also a high school counselor in charge, so I am familiar with the boys in this school as well.”

What were some processes behind selecting and organizing the Administrative Staffs?

“Basically, in the beginning of January, the school places an invitation for students who are interested in THIMUN on the school website. Students are then recruited. There are different prerequisites for different committees; students who are part of the General Assembly and other similar committees must have previous experience.”

“Then there is training throughout the whole year. The Administrative group is formed by March, with around 98 student volunteers. There are regular meetings every month, where the students are briefed and informed about expectations, conducts, appropriate attires and other activities. Nearer the conference, we have more sessions, and the volunteers are constantly prepared until the day of the conference.”

What do you think went well in THIMUN IX?

“I think the conference ran very well. There were some complaints, but overall, everything was run effectively. The first day was a challenge, as there were back-to-back events. Administrator staffs were kept busy as they started off with ushering venues, beginning committee sessions, then to the first day of lunch, until the opening ceremonies. Many of the volunteers didn’t even get breaks. However, after [the first day], everything ran quite easily.”

What do you think could be improved?

“Some small things could be improved. Sometimes, directors and delegates forget that the students are volunteers helping out the conference. So sometimes participants and directors from other schools neglected the administrative staffs. There have been instances where delegates have ordered the volunteer boys to fill water bottles, get food, and carry out chores [that are irrelevant to the conference]. Sometimes, the boys had to clean up after food that wasn’t allowed in the room. Next time, it would be better to inform the delegates about these issues [and make sure theses issues don’t happen again].”

What were some difficulties that you faced as the admin coordinator?

“The final team was formed in March, but because students have co-curricular activities, there were unexpected activities that clashed with the THIMUN conference. There were last minute withdrawals and some students left, but luckily, there were a list of standby boys [who could help out], so it was fine.”

What is the best part about being an admin coordinator?

“You get to spend a lot of time with the boys, especially since they already finished their exams and have free time. Because the expectations are not related to classroom and things are more relaxed, there are more chances for students to connect with teachers, and [so] I got to know them better.

When asked if she enjoyed her experience in this year’s THIMUN, Ms. Anu replied, “Of course! I want to thank the THIMUN admin team, for stepping in to smooth things over whenever there were problems.”
