The Newbies

he experiences that start it all.

Remember that feeling you had on the day of your first MUN conference? Your hands shaking, palms sweating, and your heart beating? The newcomers at THIMUN are very familiar with that feeling. Roaming through the halls of the Hwa Chong University, you find yourself lost in this massive campus. It is indeed nerve wracking. But as we all know, directions are not the only source of stress newbies have to deal with. The lobbying and merging, the actual debating, and the voting are to be introduced in the span of four days, but we have all experienced it first-hand. Below are a few experiences some of the newcomers have shared with us about their time here at THIMUN.

Tom van Overloop (Republic of Korea)

What has been the most difficult thing about the conference so far?

Tom: Getting used to new information, like new protocol and writing the resolutions and debating. I had no idea how it would go.

How do you feel about the conference in general?

Tom: It was stressful, the whole idea of passing resolutions.

What do you look forward to?

Tom: Well, I’m a main submitter, so I’m looking forward to the debate on that resolution. I hope it passes.

Do you think you will come back to another conference?

Tom: Uh I think so yeah, I almost definitely will.

Valerie Tan (Germany)

What has been the most difficult thing about the conference so far?

Valerie: I think, just trying to get everybody together agreeing on one resolution, everybody had different opinions and it was hard to get it to fit in one page.

What do you look forward to?

Valerie: The debate, the actual debate.

Do you think you will come back to another conference?

Valerie: Um…maybe.

Bin-wei Tan (France)

How do you feel about the conference in general?

Bin-wei: It’s pretty cool, how we create resolutions and get to express our ideas and put it all down on paper and say our opinions.

What do you look forward to?

Bin-wei: The actual debating, it’s going to be the funnest thing about the conference.

Do you think you will come back to another conference?

Bin-wei: I will be coming back next year, definitely. I made friends and hopefully I’ll make new friends. So yeah, I will be coming back!

Bill James (France)

What has been the most difficult thing about the conference so far?

Bill: Collaborating with people in different schools, because we have different ideas, but somehow we have to come to a diplomatic agreement. And it could be tricky because at the start I didn’t really know anyone, but it’s interesting to hear different people’s ideas because I personally have never thought of them before.

What do you look forward to?

Bill: Actual debate.

Do you think you will come back to another conference?

Bill: No sadly, it’s my first and my last. I graduate school this year.
After going through extensive hard work and collaboration, the delegates are all ready to get into fruitful debates and to take efficient approaches towards the issue at hand. THIMUN may be one of the most arduous and enormous conferences they will ever attend. In addition, it will certainly enlarge their global insight. Newcomers and veterans alike, hopefully this conference will help build new relations and bring about good camaraderie.
