THIMUN X Singapore

BY FRANCESCA LIM AND ROBYN WELSH

The Hague International Model United Nations first began in 1968 as a small, local conference. Since then, THIMUN has expanded to take place in three bustling cities – namely THIMUN the Hague, Singapore and Qatar. THIMUN rapidly became a global influence in the MUN community.

MUN delegates aim to come to a consensus and spark a life-long passion for MUN in today’s youth by highlighting the importance of global issues. By being involved in MUN, delegates have learned how to find diplomatic solutions to some of the most pressing issues of our generation. When THIMUN Singapore first began, many people found that the level of debate was surprisingly high for a new conference. Irene Crepin, the managing director of THIMUN Singapore gushed about the experienced schools from The Hague and Qatar conferences who led by example and pushed the debate forward adding that, “new schools would quickly follow the level of debate.”

Since the beginning, THIMUN Singapore has been a strong conference, but as time went on many were impressed by the improvements that were made. Jeff Buscher, an active member on the Advisory Board, spoke fondly of THIMUN Singapore, noting that the conference has only become smoother and more efficient as people live up to expectations set by those before.

Not only has the conference itself improved, but Irene Crepin also spoke about the delegate dinner and dance. When she started working at THIMUN  Singapore nine years ago, the dance took place at the zoo. Ms. Crepin laughed as she told us “although it was a nice venue, it was hard to keep track of all the students, even though there were not many.” Now, the dinner and dance is held at “a beautiful country club” and Crepin could not be more pleased.

Sung Jang and Jeffrey Chang, the Deputy Secretary Generals, said “the conference is quite sustainable as it is.” They agreed that there have not been many major changes, although there have been a few improvements in the rules and procedures, such as the new rule requiring nine votes to pass a resolution in the Security Council. THIMUN’s improvements have mirrored the actual UN to give the participants a realistic experience.

This year we celebrate THIMUN’s tenth anniversary — another fresh start to a new conference that will leave everyone inspired and in high spirits. The THIMUN board has put in hours of preparation to make it as special as possible. They gave each delegate new, improved goody bags at the beginning of the conference, gave out free group photos and have planned top secret special entertainment at the dinner and dance. Stephanie Tang, the Secretary General, was extremely pleased by the improvements made in the past year. Not only have the student officer briefings improved, but also e-certificates- inspired by Lisa Martin of THIMUN Qatar, have been introduced to allow delegates to access their participation certificates online. She spoke fondly of the changes made to the conference, “ten years: hundreds of student officers, thousands of guests, tens of thousands of delegates all together in one diverse community called THIMUN Singapore. Unbelievable, but true.”

THIMUN Singapore will be an experience that will change everyone involved and inspire unforgettable memories. The goal of the founders of the United Nations, “to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbours,” inspires the THIMUN Foundation and others to live together in harmony and constantly improve. The hard work and commitment of each individual participant has led to the steady amelioration of THIMUN Singapore.
