THIMUN Singapore 2014 Brag Sheet

By: Saanjh Gupta & Alyssa Choo

As delegates or humble reporters, we’ve often come to view our chairs, presidents, and editor-in-chief as towering beacons of experience – and rightfully so. Many have spent several years in the Model United Nations sphere. As such, and as a tribute to these student leaders, the below reports are a chance for them to voice their diverse experiences and talents. Some of these extend well beyond the MUN, and in ways you, as a reader, may not have surmised.

Kelsey Lussier (Chair 2nd Committee)

Fair. Serious. Enthusiastic.

Kelsey appreciates her seven MUN conferences which have spanned over a three year period and have provided the experience to enable her to overcome her fear of public speaking. Her most exhilarating, nerve-wracking experience was speaking at a plenary session.  Kelsey hopes to continue her personal development through the MUN at university in preparation for a career in diplomacy or international affairs.

Yu Hong Hwang (Deputy Chair 6th Committee)

Eccentric. Creative. Blunt.

In addition to the enlightening experience of witnessing wildly inaccurate speeches by various delegates at previous conferences (rest assured, never at THIMUN), Yu Hong is grateful for his three years and four conferences worth of experience which have allowed him to develop cogent solutions to global problems.

Lemuel Nelson (Deputy President HRC)

Quirky. Calm. You choose the last one – just don’t make it insulting.

The most memorable moment in Lemuel Nelson’s eyes was a moment he witnessed in last year’s THIMUN Singapore, as a delegate of the DPRK. In the middle of his speech, his fellow delegates stood up and clapped – quite the crowd pleaser. In the near future, Lemuel aims to secure the position of president of a committee, a step up from his position this year.

Nicholas Wong (MUNITY Editor in Chief)

Humble. Understanding. Modest.

This year’s conference is Nicholas Wong’s sweet 16th conference in his four years of MUN experience. He is capable of performing and delegating his tasks with unwavering excellence. Instead of interacting with the world on the social media, Nicholas views the Model United Nations as a unique and direct means of meeting new people and his position as our revered Editor-in-Chief this year is no exception.

Salah Mahmoud (Dep. Pres. Security Council)

Winnie the Pooh.

With three years of MUN experience, Salah Mahmoud has not only been deemed the “sleeping beauty” of chairs, but has, at various dinner-and-dances, also perfected the most crowd-pleasing dance move: the windmill. Of the eleven conferences he has attended, his first experience as a chair opened his cynical eyes to the real world. “I didn’t realize how stupid people can be – can I mention that?”

Allen Wang (ICJ President)

Canadian. Misanthropic. ‘You choose the last one’.

“[ICJ] is more about defending the law than creating it”, argues Allen Wang, president of the ICJ here at THIMUN Singapore.  Intent on ensuring its presence at future conferences, Allen reflects on his days as a “terrible” GA delegate, and urges those new to MUN to attempt participating in the ICJ at least once, as he has done several times across his eleven conferences. The highlight? “I left this trail of destruction as an ICJ witness at a conference in Shanghai,” he says – definitely a just achievement to brag about.

Peak Sen Chua (President of GA)

Reflective. Tenacious. Passionate.

Seven years and thirty-two conferences have left Peak Sen Chua, the President of the General Assembly, nothing short of accomplished in the MUN sphere. Three pieces of advice Peak Sen gives to new delegates:

  1. Empathize with your chairs;
  2. Make the most out of your experience;
  3. It gets better.

While Peak Sen is undecided about his future in MUN, it’s undeniable that his impact has already been significant.

Achievements aside, we can surely say that these individuals have made significant impacts in the MUN world; even more so, at THIMUN Singapore 2014. Whether it be working tirelessly to publish research reports or pre-conference issues, experience is no compensation for hard work. It’s evident that all those mentioned above, in addition to those mentioned in Page 9 of your Participant Information Booklet (which we expect you to have kept well), have genuinely combined both.
